It is tempting to read the ladder as a quality dial where more is better, and that is not what it does. A viewer receives one rendition at a time, chosen for the connection they have at that moment. Adding a 2160p rung does not improve what somebody on a phone in a rural area sees, it simply creates a file they will never receive. What genuinely improves their experience is having enough rungs at the bottom, because the difference between 240p and nothing is the difference between watching and giving up. Operators serving markets with uneven connectivity usually get more from a full standard definition ladder than from adding ultra high definition, and the settings let you make exactly that call. Each rendition is a file that is stored, delivered and paid for, and the same screen reports the storage and bandwidth you are actually using so the decision is not made blind. The practical advice is unglamorous. Start with a ladder that matches your market, watch what viewers actually receive, and add rungs when the numbers justify them rather than in advance. Adding a resolution later is a setting, not a migration, so there is no advantage to enabling everything at the start just in case.
